A team from JHU in May 2020 took first place in a machine translation (MT) competition sponsored by Duolingo, the world’s leading language-learning platform. Led by HLTCOE staff researcher Matt Post and JHU Ph.D. student Huda Khayrallah (CLSP), and spear-headed by COE intern Jake Bremerman (masters student at the University of Maryland, College Park), their submission took first place in all five language tasks: Hungarian, Portuguese, Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese. The team’s approach incorporated state-of-the-art machine translation models, fine-tuning on in-domain data, and filtering. For more details of their approach, see their system description paper here.
